Thanksgiving symbol

Today in class we were told that some vegans were arguing that the symbol of thanksgiving should no longer be a turkey. It’s a bird people come on its not like it’s anything serious. And not to mention it’s definitely not the brightest animal out there, I mean it’s a bird and it can barely fly. I spend a lot of my time in the woods hunting and I couldn’t tell you how many times that I’ve seen a turkey try to roost in a tree, and every time I end up laughing cause they’re so unintelligent. You can actually watch them try their hardest to make it up to a branch and when they do they sit down on it, if it’s quiet you can hear little crackling noises. Next thing you know the branch breaks off of the tree and the turkey comes crashing down with it. But here is where it gets really ridiculous, after they go plummeting to the ground, and walk around trying to walk off the big drop they just experienced the dumb bird tries it again and a lot of times it ends with the same result. So clearly this bird that they are trying to end this symbol for isn’t too bright.
I would like to actually hear the reasoning’s to why they think that it should no longer be the symbol of thanksgiving. Is it because the vegans don’t eat anything with a face so they find it disturbing? If that’s so then still why it does matter because it’s not like there is some ridiculous number of vegans in the country, we all know that there is way more non vegans. Also, it’s not like the turkey is the symbol of thanksgiving because someone saw one in the wild and thought “Wow that would just be the best symbol for a holiday and we can call it Thanksgiving.” The turkey is the symbol of this holiday because when the pilgrims settled and had this well-known meal that they shared with the Indians their main course for the meal was turkey. The original meal for thanksgiving was centered around the turkey and it always has been. When it comes to the thanksgiving dinner nobody is talking about the great salad they are about to eat, it’s all about the turkey. The turkey being the not so bright bird that has been the main course of a thanksgiving meal and the symbol of thanksgiving since it was first created, there is no reason to change this tradition and it shouldn’t be changed as the symbol. Not to mention if it was changed from the turkey what symbol could we use our hand to draw as a representation for the symbol.
